Attempting to be Vegan in San Francisco, CA

After taking five days to explore California largely on my own, I ended up in San Francisco where I spent 5 days with my traveling companion. Enjoying great meals in between visiting the tourist places (Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Lombard Street, Chinatown, Haight Ashbury, Baker Beach, The Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods) made for a fulfilling vacation.

Source (11 Division St)- Everything on their menu can be made vegan and all of the desserts are vegan. I had the Spicy Buffalo Bytes (buffalo cayenne pepper sauce with slaw & vegan ranch dressing) and a Twinkee.

Udupi Palace (1007 Valencia St)- Many of the items on the menu are vegan and the kind wait staff repeatedly reassured me (when I asked) that everything in front of me was vegan. I had the samosa chat & spinach masala dosa. I was so excited to finally have South Indian food.

Holy Gelato (1392 9th Ave)- They offer a variety of vegan flavors made with either soy or coconut milk. I selected the chocolate-peanut butter-marshmallow which was soy based and delicious.

Herbivore (983 Valencia St & 2451 Shattuck Ave Berkeley, CA)- All three of their locations are 100% vegan. When I went to the Berkeley location for dinner I had the lentil loaf with mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy, sautéed greens and crostini with tomato-sesame salsa. I went to the San Francisco location for my last meal before flying back to Philadelphia which consisted of southwestern tofu scramble with tomato chipotle salsa, black beans, guacamole, sour cream, house potatoes and blueberry corn bread.
